Fish ‘N Chips

After our grocery store experience, we had decided to make a simple version of fish and chips with things that would be found in most fridges. Now we did buy a filet of Cod which is not a typical item but was on a great sale at Lowe’s Foods. This can be substituted for any firm fish, or a frozen, more inexpensive option. We also purchased a few potatoes, some parmesean cheese, and parsley to execute this recipe. A simple 5 ingredients. This was also going to be my base skills test to see how well Tyler could follow a recipe.

I was honestly surprised, as an overall he was generally able to follow the directions and not light the kitchen on fire. However there was a moment where it could have been close. Frying is dangerous, especially in an older kitchen or an apartment kitchen that is lacking in many features. Our stove is probably from the 1970’s along with the rest of our appliances. This does not lend itself well to having hot grease splattering everywhere and a panicking man child struggling to flip a burning fish. With that being said only fry if you feel comfotable enough to handle it. Simply baking or pan searing will also make for a yummy meal. You can add some cheese and fresh herbs to the chips to spice them up if you so choose. You are welcome to make the recipe as complex or as simple as you like, and try experimenting with your own flavors! The end product will make for a very tasty dinner, especially before a long shift at work.

Grocery Shopping

Today we made the faithful trip to the grocery store. A place where most college guys go to pick up ice cream for their hormonal girlfriends, and all the frozen corndogs they can can fit in their mini freezer. Tyler is not immune to this temptation, as he is trying to leave the store just as quickly as he entered it. I however, quite enjoy a nice long run to the grocery store. I enjoy seeing the sales and the inventory. It is a place I can find inspiration, much like how an artist finds inspiration from a beautiful setting or person. I attempted today to help him shop this way. I showed him the ways of the fresh produce section and how you can find all of the components of a meal in the various isles.

Now as a college student I understand that the grocery store is a very daunting place at times, especially due to the cost of food today. this is where learning to buy certain things and the correct amounts of food will save your life. Tyler would walk over and pick up a bag of potatoes to put in the cart. This is a bit of a mistake; unless you plan to eat baked potatoes every night for the next two weeks. Instead try your hand at buying single potatoes, or single produce items. It can help you aquire more variety at a lower cost, and also minimize the amount of waste you could lose if you don’t make use a certain food item in time. Another helpful tip is to shop at a bargain food store such as; Aldi Or Go Grocery Outlet. These places often have the same items as a regular grocery store but they are either overstock or off of the name brand. However a few dollars saved in any place is worth it to a frugal student. Grocery shopping is the first step of being able to cook. Having the ability to choose ingredients and items for yourself is crucial in successful cooking. So take the extra few minutes shopping, and always look for the best sales.

Cooking With A College Boy: An Overview

Days have passed where I have watched my boyfriend(BF) not eat due to the inability to cook regularly for himself. As a 20 year old culinary student I find this slightly distressing. I see food and would much rather choose a homemade meal than processed crap any day. This does not mean that I am not guilty of popping in a frozen pizza for dinner, or even adding my own take to canned soup or noodles. This is where my idea for this blog came from.

I am going to attempt to teach my BF my newly learned skills in hopes that it can benefit his life, but also mine. Hopefully throughout this process I will be able to build his confidnece in a kitchen and give him life skills that he can take with him anywhere into his future. There will be challenges as he is rather stubborn and does not enjoy being bad a at something. This blog will follow this process as it devlopes and I will be documenting the crazy antics that ensue in our very tiny apartment kitchen. I hope to also develop recipies for college students, as well as anybody who may be on a budget. Many of these recipes will also be gluten free, as the BF has Celiacs, an autoimmune disorder that causes an intolerence to gluten. Gluten is found in many things and originates from wheat products. This can make things difficult, however it should also help me hone and perfect my skills while still being able to deliever cheap, easy, and delicious meals to all of the hungry students of our small little world.
