Cooking With A College Boy

Today we made the faithful trip to the grocery store. A place where most college guys go to pick up ice cream for their hormonal girlfriends, and all the frozen corndogs they can can fit in their mini freezer. Tyler is not immune to this temptation, as he is trying to leave the store just as quickly as he entered it. I however, quite enjoy a nice long run to the grocery store. I enjoy seeing the sales and the inventory. It is a place I can find inspiration, much like how an artist finds inspiration from a beautiful setting or person. I attempted today to help him shop this way. I showed him the ways of the fresh produce section and how you can find all of the components of a meal in the various isles.

Now as a college student I understand that the grocery store is a very daunting place at times, especially due to the cost of food today. this is where learning to buy certain things and the correct amounts of food will save your life. Tyler would walk over and pick up a bag of potatoes to put in the cart. This is a bit of a mistake; unless you plan to eat baked potatoes every night for the next two weeks. Instead try your hand at buying single potatoes, or single produce items. It can help you aquire more variety at a lower cost, and also minimize the amount of waste you could lose if you don’t make use a certain food item in time. Another helpful tip is to shop at a bargain food store such as; Aldi Or Go Grocery Outlet. These places often have the same items as a regular grocery store but they are either overstock or off of the name brand. However a few dollars saved in any place is worth it to a frugal student. Grocery shopping is the first step of being able to cook. Having the ability to choose ingredients and items for yourself is crucial in successful cooking. So take the extra few minutes shopping, and always look for the best sales.
